Review: Devolo dLAN 1200+ creates fast WiFi Hotspot & Ethernet Where You need It
It’s almost a decade and a half since we first installed WiFi in the Automated home (check this out for some nostalgia). people expect a wireless Internet connection everywhere these days and if it’s not available in every corner of your own home you’re going to hear about it from your family.
I’d been called in to setup a BT WiFi extender for a family member with just such a dead spot. I failed where they had too,with a BT branded unit that was either faulty or not up to the job.
By some good fortune the guys at Devolo had sent in their latest product, the dLAN 1200+ WiFi AC Powerline Adapter for review. The 2-part kit uses your home’s electric circuit to transmit your Internet connection around the house over its existing mains wiring.
This Powerline tech is different to most conventional WiFi repeaters, which can sometimes just re-share an already weak signal. The dLAN 1200+ WiFi Ac starter kit allows you to create a new (dual 2.4GHz and 5 GHz) hotspot in a few steps. The instruction leaflet is a multi lingual affair with an image plus a sentence or two of text for each step of the installation. I found it a little sparse, especially in regards to details like what status the various colours of flashing and steady lights meant for example.
But at the end of the day it’s a simple install. plug the first (smaller) unit in beside your router and connect it with the included Ethernet Cable. plug the second unit into a socket in the room you need to add coverage, press its button with the little house icon and within 2 minutes press the button on the side of the unit connected to the router to pair them. That’s it.
Each adapter also has two Ethernet sockets providing additional hard wired Internet connections too. optimal to plug in your Sky+ box or other DVR, smart TV, or games Console etc.
Each plugin unit has a pass through mains socket too so you won’t lose the ability to plug other items into the socket you’re using.
Additional plug-in adapters can be purchased for other rooms in the house, meaning you can create multiple WiFi hotspots where needed.
Devolo claim this setup provides the fastest WiFi from any electrical socket with Powerline data transmission speeds of up to 1200 Mbps and WiFi at ac speeds of up to 1200 Mbps.
As ever real world get no where near this but this is the fastest WiFi extender we’ve tested at around 300 Mbps at its peak.
